Human Rights - or lack thereof

Readers will be interested to look through the Seventh Report of the Joint Committee on Human Rights. This recent report is about people with learning disabilities in England and their position around human rights. Or, their lack of human rights.

The concern and dismay felt by the Committee comes through on every page of this report. It highlights the level of abuse people suffer in health and residential care contexts and also emphasises what we all know - the frequent gap between rhetoric and reality for those who live with a learning disability. It also mentions (which I had not realised before) that the UK has refused so far to ratify the UN Disability Rights Convention. In fact only 3 European states - Hungary, Spain and (bless 'em) San Marino - have done so. However only 3 more signatories mean that the Convention will come into force anyway.
