The Organisation

Housing Options is an independent advice and information service for people with learning disabilities. The aim is to assist people with learning disabilities achieve greater control over aspects of their life and to provide more housing and support choices - more options for individuals, parents, social services, care agencies. Housing Options exists to help people obtain the best option for their circumstances and this includes independent supported living and home ownership for people with learning disabilities. It does this by providing practical help, advice and information. It can be a gateway to accessing different types of social housing.

The Service

Housing Options is a national advice service and can provide advice on rented housing and home ownership options. It also offers a consultancy service to individuals, parents and any organisation involved in providing a service to people with learning disabilities.

Housing Options can help with things like:

  • Registered and Unregistered Homes
  • Shared Ownership and Homebuy
  • Joint Ownership
  • Outright Ownership
  • Setting up a company
  • Trusts
  • Legal capacity
  • Funding and mortgages
  • Income Support, Housing Benefits, ILF, Direct Payments
  • Renting in public and private sector
  • Leases and tenancy agreements
  • Support arrangements for independent living
  • Property maintenance
  • Using the family home, using equity

Workshops and Training

Housing Option's consultants offer workshops and training around issues that affect people with learning disability and their housing.

What We Charge For Services

No charge is made for information by telephone, e-mail or advice by letter. All of our factsheets are available on our website. A single paper copy of a factsheet may be requested from Housing Options free of charge. Other copies may be requested at a charge of £3.00 per copy. Housing Options will make no charge for limited direct advice to a learning disabled individual dependent on benefits, or a relative in a similar position.

  • Lead Advisors £650 a day and £380 a half day.
  • For conferences, workshops, seminars and in-house training there is a charge of £380 for half a day and £650 for a whole days work.
  • For personal consultation with one of our sessional advisors £480 a day or £275 a half day.
  • The fee for an individual Housing Options Plan, to be completed by one of our Housing Advisors is £1150.
  • Reasonable travel expenses of the Housing Advisor are additionally charged at 40p per mile by car or public transport actual cost.

Housing Options Membership

Housing Options Membership is for housing or support agencies, voluntary organisations and local, health and social service authorities.

Housing Options has two Lead Advisors, Nigel King and Maurice Harker, who work part time and manage the service.

These core advisors are supported by a network of leading experts.

Housing Options has a team of housing advisors across the country. The national co-ordinator can arrange on request, for people to meet face to face with a housing advisor and put together a Housing Options Plan.
