basic facts - renting from a council or housing association

The Housing Options Easy Read Site

To get a home through the council or a housing association, you need to go on the council housing register.

You must be given housing if you are homeless and have a better chance if you get extra points because of your situation. It can take a long time in some areas to get this type of housing.

Some councils do something called Choice Based Lettings which can make it easier for some people to get this type of housing, especially if you are not a priority for housing.

You can apply in different areas to where you currently live.

You will have a secure tenancy which means that as long as you do what it says in the tenancy, you can stay there as long as you need.

This is a good option if you want to work full time because the rents are usually cheaper.
